Elon Musk and long hours of work
When we came across an article last year about Elon Musk’s work ethic that included long hours of work, we knew that something was not right. It is highly impossible to sustain such a ridiculous work ethic for a long period of time without it affecting your work and personal life – relationships, health everything else included. Our hunch was right and yesterday, after having had a meltdown for sometime and getting into needless controversies, he agreed to step down as the Chairman for Tesla.
This seems to be typical in the tech industry. Of course, most of them are successful in achieving financial success for themselves and the company, but there are scores of “Walter Mitty’s” who drive themselves and their employees to the ground with a ridiculous working environment with no end to the torturous life. Henry Ford realized this during the early years of last century and strived to create a safe working environment. Why should it have been any different during this century? Should an entrepreneur not strive to create a happy working environment? Why would this not translate into increased productivity and financial success is beyond our understanding.
Here at Snapper, our hours of work vary because of the industry we are in. However, the attrition rate is almost near the ideal attrition rate. This is solely because of clarity in the minds of the senior management on why they set out to start this busines (In addition to the very obvious need to make money). But more about that in a later post. If you are an entrepreneur who has had a history of working long hours, then this maybe the time for you to introspect and steer your company in a direction that ensures an ideal working environment.
