Marine life in Chennai’s water-bodies faces grave danger from the plastic waste being dumped into it. Storm-water drains and sewers flowing into the various lakes and canals pollute and clog them with plastic materials. In efficient municipal solid waste management, street cleaning and garbage disposal result in the waste being dumped into nearby water-bodies.
It is saddening to see the gross lack of awareness and responsibility on the parts of both the municipality and residents equally in keeping water-bodies clean and usable. The extent of ecological damage that is being caused by citizens is unacceptable. Plastic waste dumping has been found the primary reason for wide array of ecological and civic problems from dying lakes to flooded roads.
Here is an article featured in The Hindu, on 5th Aug 2018, that sheds light on the extent of damage caused by plastics in specific and waste in general to the cities water-bodies.
